There are studies that look at sugar's effects on the reward centers of the brain and I'm sure you've heard the story that sugar is more addictive than cocaine. Is it true? Well, yeah.
On a very simplified level, when we consume sugar, a bunch of neurotransmitters are released which give us a "high", and the reward center in the brain "lights up". Like cocaine, we can habituate to the amount of sugar we consume and the body needs more to get the same feeling.
The result is that eating sugary foods gives us a "hit', the brain likes it and rewards our intake with that "high" which reinforces the behavior of eating sugar.
You could argue (loosely) that sugar is one of the worst "drugs" on the market because it's addictive, legal, and encouraged...plus, it's in everything!
Now, before you think I'm some nut-nut who's going to tell you to never eat sugar again, I want to reassure you that sugar is part of my world and it can be part of yours too if you want it to (more on that in a sec).
It's not just sugar that's the problem though...Each and every day of our lives we are exposed to other harmful chemicals in our food and environment. These come in the form of food additives, air pollution, plastics, skin "care" products, soaps, dry cleaning, and hundreds of others.
These chemicals can lead to a host of less than pleasant problems:•
Bloating • Canker Sores • Excess Weight •
Difficulty Losing Weight•
Gas • Heartburn • Sleep Problems • Difficulty Concentrating
• Fatigue •
Fluid Retention •
Food Cravings •
Headaches •
Joint Pain • Muscle Aches • Sinus Congestion • Skin Rashes
• Constipation or Diarrhea (which is worse, I don't know)
